An excellent evergreen shrub of compact growth with beautiful silvery foliage and pink flushed white flowers produced in late summer and autumn. Many of the genus are weeds, but this is a gem for warmer situations, best in full sun. A warm summer will enhance flowering.
(Purple Cone Flower) The typical plant has purple flowers, although there are many new cultivars in red, orange and yellow. It is an easy and reliable herbaceous perennial, flowering for a long period from mid summer to 60 cms., it's central boss raised and the petals often reflexed.
The evergreen magnolia is a large shrub/small tree with magnificent polished foliage and carries it's large creamy white flowers in mid summer. Best on a wall in cold areas, it is spectacular in flower. It is best in neutral to acidic soil, although lime tolerant and has been planted as a street tree.
This is a large open shrub or small tree with few stout branches and large pinnate leaves which are variegated with white. The frothy white flowers appear in September at the top of each stem when the foliage is starting to fade to reddish shades. An excellent specimen shrub.
The 'pomegranate' is relatively common in South Europe, where it is grown for it's fruit or even as a hedge. It is only hardy in the mildest areas where it's bright scarlet flowers are very striking, specially after a warm summer. The dwarf form, var. nana, makes a tight mound of evergreen foliage, dotted in September and October with bright red flowers.
